Fastest Fish & Sharks in the World (2026)

This list mixes methods, and the order follows that number. Svendsen and colleagues, Biology Open 2016, estimated burst speed from muscle-twitch data. They say a sailfish at 18.6 mph (8.3 m/s), a barracuda at 6.2, a little tunny at 5.6, and a dorado at 4.0. Those are point estimates. The uncertainties stay in the notes. None of those four is a logged swim.

Is that figure claimed or verified?

Sailfish is labeled Estimated. Calculated or approximated rather than directly timed.

What is the source?

The figure cites Biology Open, “Maximum swimming speeds of sailfish and three other large marine predatory fish species based on muscle contraction time and stride length: a myth revisited.”

What is second?

The great white shark is next, at about 15.0 mph (6.7 m/s), an estimate.

The great white is 15.0 mph (6.7 m/s). Watanabe and colleagues 2019 estimated it from tailbeat frequency during a filmed seal chase, after the propeller stalled. Waller reprints 15.0 mph (6.70 m/s) and labels the method a speedometer. The primary paper calls it an estimate, so the qualifier stays estimated. The shortfin mako is a bio-logger burst of 11.2 mph (5.02 m/s) from a 6.6 feet (2 meter) female, held for 14 seconds.

Four more bursts are Waller's Table 4 reprints: oceanic whitetip 10.3 mph (4.6 m/s), Atlantic bluefin 2.5, blue marlin 2.2, and blue shark 2.0. A caged juvenile Pacific bluefin is not a separate figure. Ten fish are enough for a public ranking.
