Mechanism

Why it's so fast

Filippo Ganna hour record's hour record is distance in sixty minutes, not a top speed. The fast hours are riders who waste as little power as possible on drag and who do not go out too hard.

  1. The rider is the drag

Most of the air hits the person. The tuck, the suit and the bike shrink that shape. A one-second sprint on a road bike is a different event.

  2. Pacing under rules

The governing body says what equipment and what track count. The entry cites that mark. An unofficial attempt with illegal positions is not the row.

Context

Background

Chris Boardman's 56.375 km ride in 1996 used a position the UCI later banned. Guinness mentions it as a best human effort and does not mix it into this UCI-rules record. It is not a row.
