Why it's so fast

A 200 metres adds a bend. The athlete has to be fast in a curve and still have speed on the straight, which is why pure 100 metre speed is not the whole event.

  1. The bend

Running the curve without breaking stride is its own skill. Lean too little and you drift. Lean too much and you slow down.

  2. Speed endurance

The second 100 metres shows who can hold the speed. A brilliant start that dies on the straight does not win this list.

The mark people mean is Usain Bolt.

This is how the category works. A note written for this entry appears here once it is in the database.

Context

Background

Letsile Tebogo's ranked men's 200 m time is 19.46 seconds at Saint-Denis on 8 August 2024, wind +0.4 m/s. World Athletics, Athletic Stats (refreshed 5 October 2026) and Track & Field News print that time and date.

The list is one event. A mark from another distance is a different page, with its own slug. Wind above +2.0 m/s is not legal and is not stored. Lower is faster.
