Nature on this site ranks wind in two scopes, because a 3-second gust and a maximum sustained wind are different instruments and different averaging times. The gust list is the World Meteorological Organization's surface-gust extremes. Barrow Island, during Cyclone Olivia, is 113.2 m/s on 10 April 1996. Mount Washington is 103.3 m/s on 12 April 1934, the northern-hemisphere maximum on the same tables. The 2012 evaluation paper prints 113.3 m/s for the Barrow Island anemometers. The archive's 113.2 m/s is the rank.

The sustained-wind list is the tropical-cyclone extreme. The WMO tables tie Hurricane Patricia and Typhoon Nancy at 95 m/s. The National Hurricane Center estimates Patricia's peak at 185 knots, which is that 95 m/s, at 1200 UTC on 23 October 2015. A 2017 Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society paper states the tie with Nancy. Patricia's gusts are not copied onto the gust list.
Waves, eruptions and growth rates are unpublished. Neither wind list has ten rows, so the hub stays out of the index. Checked 8 October 2026.
